Deputy-Involved Shooting in Midway City

Midway City, Ca. (June 14, 2023): A deputy-involved shooting occurred this morning on a residential street in the 14000 block of Van Buren Street in Midway City.  The suspect, an Asian man, was armed with a hatchet at the time of the shooting. 

At 4:54 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the 14000 block of Van Buren Street reference a residential burglary and vehicular vandalism. When deputies arrived, they were directed to a residence where they located the suspect holding a hatchet on a sidewalk adjacent to a house.   Based on preliminary information, it is believed that the suspect advanced toward the deputies armed with the hatchet. At approximately 5:04 a.m., the deputy-involved shooting occurred.

Deputies at the scene provided lifesaving measures to the suspect. Orange County Fire Authority provided additional medical aid and pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene. No deputies were injured.

The hatchet was recovered at the scene. It is unknown how the suspect obtained the hatchet and at this time, it is not believed that there is a connection between the suspect and the residents where the incident occurred.

The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending official identification and next-of-kin notification by the Orange County Coroner.

Per protocol, the investigation of the deputy-involved shooting will be handled by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Deputies in Midway City are equipped with body-worn cameras. Footage from the incident will be released in accordance with the law and in consultation with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.  ###
