On February 4, 1995, Hernandez went to his ex-wife's residence in Stanton to pick up his 4 year old daughter. The ex-wife's boyfriend, Jorge Lopez, was at the residence and a verbal argument ensued between Lopez and Hernandez. The argument escalated into a physical altercation, during which, Hernandez shot Lopez. the incident was witnessed by the ex-wife and several of her neighbors.
